A Utah-based lawyer has been sanctioned by the state’s Court of Appeals after he filed a legal brief containing citations to a nonexistent court case generated by artificial intelligence. The court documents reported by ABC4 says the Court of Appeals found that Attorney Richard Bednar submitted a petition that included “fabricated legal authority” obtained from ChatGPT. The filing referenced a case titled Royer v Nelson—a citation that, upon review, did not exist in any known legal database. In its ruling, the court emphasized the evolving role of AI in legal research but emphasized that it does not exempt lawyers from…
The Federal Capital Territory (FCT) Minister, Nyesom Wike and suspended Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara, has yesterday disagreed over the resolution of the protracted crisis. While Wike was of the opinion that Fubara has not demonstrated commitment to reconciliation. He said: “I want to assure you that the issues will soon be resolved, and you will come back to your offices; not just at the Executive arm, but also Legislative arm. “And I also believe that the strong relationships we had before will return, and we will begin to work together again, for the good and progress of the State.…
A Nigerian military fighter jet has mistakenly released explosives that killed about 20 men of a vigilante group during an operation targeting bandits in Garin Mani, a village in the Maru Local Government Area of Zamfara State. The tragic incident occurred shortly after armed bandits struck the village, terminating lives of several residents and abducting over 50 others, mostly farmers who were working on their fields. My attention has been drawn to a purported release by two individuals from the aforementioned ward in Idanre Local Government, which incidentally is the ward of Hon. Festus O. Akingbaso, MHR. The release attempts to portray his defection as trivial and unpopular, with an ulterior motive for reelection. The facts are clear: the PDP’s national leadership has struggled to manage the party for cohesion, which is essential for winning subsequent elections. Notably, the party’s presidential candidate, H.E. Atiku Abubakar, is reportedly exploring alternative party options, while his running mate has already defected. Furthermore, ongoing litigations pose a threat to the…
The Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, Nyesom Wike has insisted on remaining a member of the Peoples Democratic Party despite being a Minister in the APC cabinet of President Bola Ahmed Tinubu, daring anybody to sack him. He made the statement on Monday while disclosing his resolve to work hard for the party. Addressing his monthly press briefing, the Minister warned that he’s not afraid to step on the toes of rich people. According to Wike, he enjoys stepping on the toes of the wealthy, not the poor people. He said: “Look at what we are doing differently.…
The lawmaker representing the Idanre/Ifedore Federal Constituency in the House of Representatives, Hon. Festus Akingbaso, has refuted claims made by the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) Alade/Atoshin ward, represented by Mr. Sangotunsi Tokunbo and Comr. Ojo Adegunleka. They alleged that his defection to the ruling All Progressives Congress (APC) occurred without the party’s knowledge. Hon. Akingbaso described this narrative as a fabrication by self-serving individuals intent on distorting facts and sowing confusion among constituents. In a statement released through his Special Assistant on Media and Publicity, Pharm. Femi Adebayo, on June 2, 2025, the lawmaker clarified that his defection was done…
NTRODUCTION In a landmark decision in ATTORNEY GENERAL OF THE FEDERATION V. ATTORNEY GENERAL OF ABIA STATE & ORS (2024) LPELR-62576(SC) last year, the Supreme Court gave the local government system full autonomy, warning governors to keep their political fingers off Local Government Councils (LGCs). The legal status of the LGCs in Osun State has however been the subject of intense political and judicial debate following the 2022 local government elections. The matter has seen multiple judicial determinations, culminating in two critical Federal High Court judgements; one obtained by the People’s Democratic Party (PDP) and the other by the Action…
Lawyers and litigants were left stranded Monday morning as members of the Judiciary Staff Union of Nigeria (JUSUN) locked the gates of the Federal High Court in Abuja, making good on their threat to embark on an indefinite nationwide strike.Nigerian cultural tours A human rights lawyer, Deji Adeyanju, confirmed the disruption in a Facebook post seen by SaharaReporters, lamenting that legal proceedings had been abruptly grounded due to the industrial action. “Federal High Court gate locked.
