A violent confrontation erupted on Monday involving Oba Odidiomo Afolabi Oladimeji, the Olu of Igbokoda, and an unidentified community leader during the flag-off ceremony for the 27.5km Igbokoda–Okitipupa road dualization, officiated by Governor Lucky Aiyedatiwa.
According to eyewitnesses, the dispute began when Oba Afolabi requested that a man seated beside another traditional ruler stand in his honor. The man, reportedly a relative of an high profile government official rumoured to be the governor, refused, prompting the monarch to strike him with his staff. This led to a severe brawl, during which the monarch sustained a serious injury—his ear was bitten by the other man.

Oba Afolabi subsequently left the event for medical treatment, resulting in his absence from the ceremony. Efforts by journalists to reach him were unsuccessful, as he did not respond to calls or text messages. Sources close to the monarch confirmed the altercation.
The incident has sparked widespread reactions on social media. A local resident, Omono Ilaje, expressed deep concern and disappointment over the monarch’s behavior, stating that such actions bring shame to the institution of royalty.
In his statement, Omono Ilaje emphasized the need for accountability and suggested that the council of Obas should suspend Oba Afolabi pending a thorough investigation. He also called for the state government to support his suspension and consider possible dethronement if misconduct is proven.
Ilaje urged the authorities to take decisive action to restore the dignity of the traditional institution, recommending the following steps:
1. Suspend Oba Odidi Afolabi pending investigation.
2. Conduct a thorough investigation into the incident and the monarch’s past behavior.
3. Consider dethroning the monarch if found guilty of misconduct.
By addressing this issue promptly, the integrity of the royal institution can be upheld.
Signed,
Omono Ilaje
