On Saturday, March 15, residents of Kalabari in Rivers State gathered in large numbers to protest the upcoming visit of former governor and current Minister of the Federal Capital Territory (FCT), Nyesom Wike, to Abalama in the Asari-Toru Local Government Area.
The protest follows the formal rejection of a planned Thanksgiving Service and Civic Reception in Wike’s honor by the Amayanabo of Abalama, King Dr. A. B. Big Tom Tom JP. In a letter addressed to the Rivers State Commissioner of Police dated March 12, 2025, the monarch cited political tensions and security concerns as reasons for his decision.

He expressed his surprise at learning about the event through Facebook, despite being the paramount ruler of Abalama. The letter stated: “My council of chiefs and I have resolved that no political activity should be held in Abalama due to the ongoing political crisis in Rivers State, and I made a radio announcement to that effect.”
Viral videos on social media depict protesters, including women and youths, brandishing placards opposing Wike’s visit. Some demonstrators blocked roads, leading to significant movement restrictions in the area.
The protesters declared their intent to prevent Wike from entering their community, referencing his previous remark that the Kalabari people are a minority in the state.
This situation unfolds amidst a continuing political rift between Wike and his successor, Governor Siminalayi Fubara.
