A celebrated author and founder of the Literary Authors Cooperative Society (LITACO), Awele Ilusanmi, has urged writers to create engaging narratives to enhance their market appeal.
Ilusanmi shared her insights during a recent virtual reading of her book, Profitable Pages, organized by the Literary Renaissance Foundation (LRF). This organization aims to address the decline in reading culture in Nigeria and regularly hosts events to encourage literacy among children.

Positioning her book as a guide for authors seeking to increase their visibility, Awele emphasized the importance of effective book marketing and promotion. She discussed her personal journey as an author and her successful transition to the U.S., attributing much of her success to her book.
In her remarks, she stated: “Readers have diverse preferences. They are drawn to well-developed, relatable characters with flaws and grudges throughout the story. Engaging plots that incorporate twists and turns keep readers captivated.”
“Whether set in a fantasy realm, historical context, or futuristic world, vivid descriptions can bring a story’s environment to life.”
Awele also highlighted the significance of unique concepts that offer fresh perspectives, noting that emotional resilience in storytelling can enhance a book’s memorability. “Readers appreciate stories that evoke laughter or provoke deep questions,” she said, emphasizing the value of eloquent prose and a writing style that fits the narrative’s tone.
Books tackling timely themes—such as social issues, identity, and relationships—can be particularly compelling. She added, “In mysteries and thrillers, maintaining suspense encourages readers to keep turning the pages.”
Finally, Awele emphasized the importance of satisfying conclusions, where loose ends are tied up and align with the story’s themes. She encouraged representation of diverse perspectives and experiences to make stories more inclusive, urging authors to remain open to feedback and evolving trends.
