The Nigerian Institute of Surveyors (NIS) in Ondo State has strongly criticized Governor Aiyedatiwa’s Special Adviser on Union Matters and Special Duties, Hon. Bola Taiwo, for his recent thoughtless remarks following the abduction of nine of its members last week.
The NIS has issued a 48-hour ultimatum for Taiwo to retract his statements regarding the kidnapping of the nine members in Ilu-Abo, Akure North Local Government Area. Additionally, the institute is calling for Taiwo’s immediate dismissal due to his unguarded and insensitive comments on this serious incident.

Taiwo was reported to have attributed the kidnapping to the victims’ failure to secure adequate protection after receiving substantial payments from their clients.
During a press conference at the NIS Secretariat in Akure, the Ondo State Chairman, Surveyor Kayode Bello, along with other executives and members, condemned Taiwo’s remarks as unfortunate and unacceptable.
Bello stated, “The Special Adviser’s comments have serious implications for our members in Ondo State. His words have made it unsafe for our surveyors to carry out their daily work. They are now viewed as wealthy targets for kidnappers who assume we can easily pay ransoms.”
He urged the governor to reassess Taiwo’s position, emphasizing the need for a more competent adviser who can effectively represent the interests of the people.
“The government must prioritize the safety of lives and property. As law-abiding citizens, we pay taxes willingly and expect the government to ensure our security. We are grateful for the efforts of community leaders and officials that helped secure the release of the kidnapped workers.”
Bello expressed deep disappointment over the ongoing security challenges in Ondo State and criticized the political response to the situation. He emphasized that blaming the victims for not having security escorts is inappropriate, as surveyors and other professionals typically do not work with armed protection.
“It is not fair to single out surveying as a profession that requires security escorts. The government has a fundamental responsibility to provide safety for all citizens, rather than shifting blame to those who are victimized.”
Bello also dismissed Taiwo’s claims about surveyors neglecting to invest in security, stating that such assertions are unfounded. “Like any profession, surveying operates within regulated fees, and it is unrealistic to expect professionals to cover personal security costs through their charges.”
He concluded by urging the government to focus on enhancing security measures instead of making insensitive remarks.
