Post-Election Tensions in Cameroon: Vote Counting Commission Takes Action

๐Ÿ‘‰ Composed of 33 members, the body is responsible for counting the votes in the October 12 presidential election.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Its composition, formalized yesterday by the Electoral Council of Cameroon, provides for the compilation of the minutes submitted by the 58 departmental commissions.

๐Ÿ‘‰ Once this work is completed, the commission’s report will be sent to the Constitutional Council, which is mandated to proclaim the final results by October 26.

The atmosphere remains tense in the country as 92-year-old President Paul Biya, already in power for 43 years, seeks an eighth term. Even before the official results were announced, Issa Tchiroma Bakary, candidate of the Cameroon National Salvation Front, declared victory. Protests erupted in Douala and Dschang, with demonstrators accusing authorities of electoral fraud.
